Our new Charity of the Year is… drum roll please… OzHarvest Canberra!

We are so excited to work with this deserving charity for the next 12 months. The partnership will enable OzHarvest the ability to harness the fundraising power of the Vikings Group. Vikings will pledge a donation with the commitment to fundraise and promote the Charity of the Year, extending to a variety of activities and public relationed events.

OzHarvest is the leading food rescue organisation in Australia, collecting quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivering it direct to more than 900 charities who support people in need across Australia. It operates in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth and in regional communities across the country. Since 2004, OzHarvest has delivered over 60 million meals and saved more than 20,000 tonnes of food from ending up in landfill.

OzHarvest is the only food rescue organisation in Australia collecting surplus food from all types of food providers including fruit and vegetable markets, supermarkets, hotels, wholesalers, farmers, stadiums, corporate events, catering companies, shopping centres, delis, cafes, restaurants, film, TV shoots and boardrooms.

OzHarvest also addresses food security and education through NEST and Nourish programs. NEST provides nutrition education and sustenance training to vulnerable Australians, Nourish trains and mentors disadvantaged youth for a Certificate II in Hospitality. OzHarvest also focuses on engaging with the community and embracing innovative approaches to minimising food waste, like Australia’s first rescued food supermarket, OzHarvest Market.

The partnership between Vikings and OzHarvest will allow the charity to further their mission to eliminate hunger and food waste in Canberra. The Vikings Group will assist OzHarvest in educating and raising awareness about food waste, food rescue, food security and sustainability.

These values include supporting our community, increasing social benefits and a commitment to continue to contribute effectively to the development of our community.

HOW VIKINGS PLAN TO HELP 

Throughout the year, a variety of initiatives will run to assist OzHarvest:

Ongoing food/can drives for all Vikings members to donate unused food

Vikings restaurants to donate a percentage of earnings to OzHarvest on a designated night

Vikings restaurants to hold an OzHarvest food night at the Vikings Club

Game day OzHarvest stall or soup kitchen offering patrons warm soup during winter Rugby games at Viking Park

 

HOW MEMBERS CAN GET  INVOLVED

Vikings Group Members can support our Charity of the Year, OzHarvest through the following initiatives that will be coming soon to Vikings;

Picking the OzHarvest dish when you dine at Vikings, $1 from every dish purchased will be donated to OzHarvest. Keep your eyes peeled for the OzHarvest dish on the menu, coming soon.

Attending OzHarvest fundraising events throughout the year – keep your eyes peeled for events in Club News and on our website

Donating spare change to the donation boxes at all four venues.

Vikings will be decorating our venues over the Christmas period, this will include a Christmas Giving Tree, where you can donate canned food items or simply purchase a Christmas decoration from Reception to hang on the tree with all funds raised donated to OzHarvest.
