Possible Changes to the Community Contribution Scheme

Vikings Group has always placed a high value on the support it provides to our local community. Over the past 40 years Vikings Group has developed its community program and now supports over 50 affiliated sporting and community groups.

Groups like the Tuggeranong Netball Association and the Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club, through our support they have been able to run their regular seasonal competitions, receive uniform support, special event support, assistance hosting international competitions, maintaining surfaces and have been provided financial assistance for athletes selected for higher representative honours.

We have seen members of the affiliated groups go on to achieve great things like Caroline Buchanan who came from humble beginnings at the Tuggeranong Vikings BMX Club and has now represented Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in the women’s BMX event and was the Australian Athlete of the Year in 2013.

We have also seen Vikings Group play a major role in the community, supporting community groups like Red Nose, OzHarvest, Lifeline, Salvation Army, Rotary Club of Canberra, Cancer Council ACT, Tara Costigan Foundation, the Vietnam Veterans Federation ACT and the St Vincent de Paul Society, through monetary and in-kind support enabling them to do what they need to do for their causes.

The support our sporting and community groups have received from Vikings Group may now be in jeopardy.

The ACT Government is proposing to change the Club Community Contribution model to move support away from individual sporting and community groups to a select centralised charity (see the video here).

This means there is a very high probability that the support Vikings Group provides to many of its community groups (cash and in-kind including free meeting and room hire) may change.
